How CS2 cases work

A case is a container with skins from one series. It opens with a key bought in-game for $2.84; keys cannot be sold on the market, so the key is the one part of the opening cost you cannot save on. Inside there are usually 17 skins across five rarities plus a rare special item — a knife or gloves from a separate list.

The odds are the same for every case: Mil-Spec 79.92%, Restricted 15.98%, Classified 3.20%, Covert 0.64%, knife or gloves 0.26%. One item in ten drops with a StatTrak™ counter. Wear is random too: the same skin can come out Factory New or Battle-Scarred, and the price gap between them is several times over.

Where cases come from and where to buy them

Cases drop for playing on official servers: after your first level-up of the week you get a weekly care package and pick two of four items. Only cases from the active drop pool come this way. The rest are sold on the Steam Community Market and on third-party markets, where the same cases are usually cheaper because sellers pay lower fees. Cases retired from the drop pool keep rising for years — the priciest right now is CS:GO Weapon Case at $98.90.

Are cases worth opening

As an investment — no. Even the case with the best ROI returns 65.6% of the opening cost, and the chance to come out ahead on a single try is at most 21.2%. If you want a specific skin, buying it outright is cheaper: the item page shows prices on every market. Opening cases makes sense for the thrill, with money you can afford to lose.
