Fake Howl: building the wolf from stickers for under $2

Фейковый Howl: как собрать «Вой» из наклеек за 130 ₽

M4A4 | Howl (Field-Tested)M4A4 | Howl (Field-Tested) has a unique status: after the stolen-artwork scandal Valve pulled the skin from cases and gave it the game's only «contraband» grade. No new copies enter circulation, and the price behaves accordingly — a Field-Tested starts from $4,089. So players long ago started building not the Howl itself but its look: stickers on the right base read as that burning wolf from normal distance. There is more than one way to do it — this article collects every known combination, from a two-dollar build to collector pieces worth a fortune.

Why this works at all

In CS2 stickers are no longer four fixed points like in CS:GO. There are five slots now, and every sticker can be moved anywhere on the weapon, rotated and layered on top of others. This is what spawned the «picture craft» subculture: individual stickers get combined into full images — flames, skulls, silhouettes of expensive skins. The fire-built Howl is the most famous subject of that subculture.

The number-one rule before you buy anything: a craft is irreversible. A sticker cannot be removed and re-applied — only scraped off, which destroys it. And if the weapon goes into a trade-up contract, the stickers burn with it. Craft what you don't plan to sell.

The showcased build: a Converter and five stickers for about $1.4

The composition on our shots is the same one you find in live market listings: the base is M4A4 | Converter (Field-Tested)M4A4 | Converter (Field-Tested) — its red-and-black finish is the closest match to the original's background. On top go five paper stickers from the Elemental Craft set (The Armory update): two High Heat plus one each of Scorch Loop, Boom Trail and Winding Scorch. Placed correctly, the flames fold into the silhouette of the wolf's head.

How to place the stickers

Every known variant of the build

The Steam-guide variation: two Winding Scorch instead of the second High Heat

Both big Steam guides («VERY REALISTIC FAKE HOWL 2024» and «M4A4 | Howl — Sticker Craft») build the fire slightly differently: Boom Trail + Scorch Loop + High Heat + 2× Sticker | Winding ScorchSticker | Winding Scorch. The double wave gives the flames more backwards motion towards the stock, at the cost of a less dense centre. This build is a touch cheaper — about $1.2. Which one is «correct» is taste: the showcased set matches the mass of the fire, this one matches its motion.

Alternative bases: from Evil Daimyo to Royal Paladin

The stickers stay the same — the base sets the character of the build. Any dark or red-and-black M4A4 works; here is every option that appears in guides and on the market, with live prices:

A live market example. On buff163 there is a StatTrak™ M4A4 | Royal Paladin (Battle-Scarred)M4A4 | Royal Paladin (Battle-Scarred) listed with the fire set — Scorch Loop, Boom Trail, High Heat — and the name tag «THE G L O R Y». The asking price is ¥9,999, roughly $1,300, while the StatTrak base starts at $73 and the stickers cost under a dollar. Sellers aren't shy about asking twenty times the parts cost for a recognisable build. The key caveat: that is an asking price, not a completed sale — nobody is obliged to pay that premium.

A reproduction of that very listing: a StatTrak™ Royal Paladin with the fire set. Gold ornament plus flames — the «expensive» version of the build.

Foil and Reverse fire upgrades

Premium fire: Flammable (Foil) — the pre-Armory way

Before Elemental Craft came out, the fire was built from Sticker | Flammable (Foil)Sticker | Flammable (Foil) — a large foiled burst. Four of them on a dark base give a dense «burning» coverage, but at $85 apiece the set of four comes to about $339 — what used to be a budget idea now sits in the mid price segment. It is rarely built this way today, but these are the crafts you see on older listings.

The literal wolf: Sticker | Howling Dawn

There is also a way that skips the fire entirely: Sticker | Howling DawnSticker | Howling Dawn — the sticker carrying that very howling-wolf artwork. It shares the skin's fate: in July 2014 it was removed from the game together with the Howl, making it the only contraband sticker. It now starts from $1,333 — more than many knives, so «budget fake» it is not. One sticker on a clean dark base is the most honest homage to the original; and the «four Howling Dawns on a real Howl» craft exists in only seven copies and counts among the game's premier collector builds.

How real Howls get crafted

A separate genre is crafting not «towards» a Howl but onto one: owners amplify the original with expensive stickers. The best-known builds from craft galleries (esportfire) — with sticker prices from our database:

Understand one thing though: a craft is spending, not investing. The market values a stickered weapon at close to the bare base price; a recognisable image sometimes earns a premium (as in the Royal Paladin example above), but you can't count on it. You build a fire Howl for the sake of having a fire Howl. How much sticker value actually comes back at sale time — and how to count the overpay — is covered in our CS2 sticker prices and rarity breakdown.

Частые вопросы

Which variant looks closest to a real Howl?
The one showcased in this article: an M4A4 | Converter plus two High Heat, a Scorch Loop, a Boom Trail and a Winding Scorch, finished with an «M4A4 | Howl» name tag — this set mirrors real crafts on the market. The Steam guides offer a close variation with two Winding Scorch; the background and the mass of fire read as the Howl either way.
How close does the build get on close inspection?
At gameplay distance or in an opponent's hands — very close: the red-and-black background and the mass of fire read as the Howl. Inspected point-blank, the difference is obvious — which is fine: the craft is about the look, not deception.
Can I later sell the build for more than the parts cost?
As a rule — no. Stickers add almost nothing to a weapon's sale price, and they can't be removed without being destroyed. Exceptions happen with very recognisable crafts — the Royal Paladin listing in this article asks twenty times the parts cost — but those are asking prices and collector stories, not the rule.
What happens to the stickers if the weapon goes into a trade-up?
They burn with the weapon — the contract consumes the item whole and stickers are not returned. Double-check what you feed into a contract: crafted items are worth filtering out by hand.
Why is the Howl itself so expensive?
It's the game's only «contraband» item: in 2014 the skin's artwork turned out to be stolen from a third-party artist, and Valve removed it from cases forever. Existing copies stayed with their owners and no new ones drop — classic scarcity. The Howling Dawn sticker shares the same story.
Prices in this article are live: they are pulled from our database on every page load (the lowest across marketplaces, shown in dollars in the English version). Before buying, still open the item cards linked above — they hold a cross-market comparison with fees factored in.
